Golden Roof Museum

Innsbruck's landmark

The magnificent building is certainly the photo motif par excellence in Innsbruck. Famous all over the world, a trip to the Golden Roof is a must during your winter holidays in Tyrol. It’s especially stunning during the Advent season, when Innsbruck's Christmas Market, with its varied stands and wonderful lighting, conjures up a very contemplative atmosphere in Innsbruck's Old Town, and the Golden Roof is literally enthroned above the market.

Modern exhibition form

Multimedia museum technology is used in the Golden Roof Museum, making the museum experience even more tangible. The thematically structured rooms offer many contemporary exhibits and lots of interesting facts about Emperor Maximilian I. For the youngest visitors there are exciting children's stations and an exclusive Golden Roof Riddle Rally.

Museum von dem Goldenen Dachl

Accessible to everyone

Accessibility was particularly important during the redesign of the museum. The delicate balance between monument protection and innovative structural standards was struck masterfully here. The impressive view of Innsbruck's old town from the Golden Roof is now easily accessible to everyone.

Rich in meaning and history

At the behest of Emperor Maximilian I, the magnificent oriel window was built between 1497 and 1500. A total of 2,657 firegilded copper shingles then adorned the Golden Roof. His goal was to impress travellers from afar with his late Gothic style. In the middle of the last century the relief plates were replaced. Copies were attached to the oriel window, but today six completely restored originals can be seen in the Golden Roof Museum. Additionally, a visit to the museum is worth your while because there is so much more to learn here.
