At the behest of Emperor Maximilian I, the magnificent oriel window was built between 1497 and 1500. A total of 2,657 firegilded copper shingles then adorned the Golden Roof. His goal was to impress travellers from afar with his late Gothic style. In the middle of the last century the relief plates were replaced. Copies were attached to the oriel window, but today six completely restored originals can be seen in the Golden Roof Museum.
